Shoulder Care

The Shoulder is one of my favorite joints as it is a balance of mobility and stability that allows the arm to manipulate objects and move freely.  It is a ball in socket joint that allows all these degrees of freedom of movement.

But the challenge is keeping this joint stable.  This is accomplished through the anatomy and strength of the capsule, labrum, and rotator cuff muscles.

Proper mechanics is key as well.  The muscles coordinate to allow the humerus the proper spin, compression, and elevation to move the arm while preventing pinching.

Lastly, posture also plays a critical role in stability as well. If one slouches, the shoulder is less stable and is at risk for impingement or pinching.

Principles for Treatment

-Do No Harm-avoid exercises that cause pain.

-Strengthen Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Girdle Muscles

-Improve flexibility of tight muscles to ensure proper length tension relationships

-Improve posture and mechanics

-Do No Harm

Background

The Key to the right exercise program is one that creates enough meaningful change and is attainable to do.  Basically I know how it is to have a busy schedule;-)
