Neck Care

The Spine when healthy is a great combination of strength and flexibility.  The bones and ligaments give the spine stability,  The discs give the spine flexibility.  The spine when healthy is designed to protect the nerves that run through it.  The spinal cord runs down the central canal and terminates at L1 into a loose bundle of nerves called the cauda equina. At each level the nerves exit what is called the foramen before finally traveling to the skin or muscle it innervates.

What is also important to know is that the muscles surrounding the area-the Core muscles-can increase the amount of load the spine can handle and thus give the spine added protection from injury.

When flexibility and strength are maintained, the spine is in equilibrium and a person is painfree.

However, when there is a fault in structural support either through age, trauma, or poor habits/mechanics, one is at risk for injuring themselves.

This kit was designed for the patient to empower themselves.  In the following videos, you will learn:

-my recommended exercises for general core strengthening and stretching

-proper sitting position and ergonomics

-proper lifting mechanics

-what to do when if you do hurt yourself

-what tools you can use to help with your pain or symptoms

-what to do to help rehab yourself back to good health

Principles for Treatment

-Do no harm.  Theses exercises and instructions were designed to improve your health not cause harm.  If any of these exercises cause pain, please refrain.

-The challenge is knowing what to do when!  With any recent injury treat the inflammation.  When the body is ready, try to implement general conditioning-walking is a great exercise for the spine and health and wellness.  When conditioning improves, try to improve strength and flexibility with exercises.  When continue to do well focus on continued strengthening to prevent future injury.

-Again-Do no harm.  If any questions or concerns, please consult with your Doctor or Healthcare Practitioner.

-And most of All-Have Fun, be patient with your rehab process!

Exercise and Video Instruction

The key to the right exercise program is one that creates enough meaningful change but is attainable to do.  Basically, I know how it is to have a busy schedule:-)

Background

The Spine consists of 33 bones called vertebrae, separated by cushion like discs.  It can be divided into 3 regions for naming purposes: The Cervical, Thoracic, and Lumbar.

The Cervical Region is composed of 7 vertebrae numbered C1-C7.

The Thoracic Region is composed of 12 vertebrae numbered T1-T12 with attached ribs.

The Lumbar Region is composed of 5 vertebrae numbered L1-L5

The Sacrum is composed of 5 bones that fuse early in development.

And lasty the coccyx is the tail bone.
